Most garments are made from fabric that was already coloured. Comfort Colors is dyed once the piece is fully constructed. That single change in order of operations is what produces the character the range is known for, a slightly uneven, softened colour that looks worn in before anyone has worn it.
Why does the colour vary between pieces?
Pigment dye sits on the surface of the fibre rather than soaking through it. Across a production run that means small shifts in depth between pieces, and it means the colour gently softens with washing. If you are expecting a flat, identical corporate colour across two hundred shirts, this is the wrong range. If you want something with a bit of life in it, this is exactly why people choose it.
What sort of merch suits Comfort Colors?
It performs best where the shirt is the product rather than the uniform. Bands, breweries, cafes, clubs and anything sold rather than handed out. The vintage feel does a lot of the work that would otherwise fall to the artwork.
Will two orders months apart match?
Closely, but not identically. Batch variation is inherent to garment dyeing. Order the full quantity at once if an exact match across the group matters to you.
Does the print look different on it?
A print on a softened surface reads slightly less crisp than on a smooth blank, which usually suits the aesthetic. If you want a hard edged graphic, say so and we will talk through the options.
